For most San Diego houses: lean Ecobee if you have a heat pump, no C-wire, HomeKit, or rooms that lie about the hallway. Lean Nest if you want Google’s learning schedule and you already have C on a simple conventional system. Climate Pros SD matches you with licensed, independent HVAC pros who install both. We do not sell thermostats or set labor rates.

What do reviewer videos miss?

Compatibility, landing the reversing valve, and static comfort beat screen beauty. A thermostat that “almost” controls a two-stage heat pump can run backup heat too often. That wastes energy. It is not a verified percent.

San Diego cooling seasons are long inland and short on the water. NWS describes ocean moderation at the coast and hotter valleys inland. Sensors matter more on two-story inland houses than on a small coastal bungalow.

Why does Ecobee usually win on heat pumps?

Heat pumps need honest control of auxiliary heat (strips or a gas furnace). Ecobee generally exposes temperature and time thresholds. Nest can support heat pumps, but aux behavior is easier to get wrong. Dual fuel needs outdoor switchover settings, not a mystery learning period.

Heat-pump equipment incentives are not a thermostat rebate. TECH single-family heat pump HVAC reservations stopped November 14, 2025. HEEHRA single-family was fully reserved February 24, 2026. Section 25C does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025. See the heat pump rebate stack article for program status, not for a current coupon.

What is the C-wire gotcha?

Smart stats want constant 24V. Many pre-1990 San Diego houses never pulled C. Ecobee kits often include a PEK at the air handler. Nest may power-steal. Techs in the referral network see intermittent Nest issues on older boards when C is missing. If you insist on Nest without C, budget a real conductor or a Nest power connector. The installer prices that path.

When do Ecobee sensors matter?

Two-story houses with the stat downstairs. West bedrooms. Home offices that bake. Averaging or prioritizing a bedroom at night is cheaper than imagining duct redesign. Zoning dampers are a different product. See zoning.

Where does Nest still win?

Auto-schedule after you live with it for a couple of weeks. Display and dial. Google camera and speaker households. Some TOU helpers exist on both brands. SDG&E listed residential time-of-use plans peak 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. SDG&E suggests precool, then 78F or higher during that window, health permitting. Neither brand invents a legal savings percent. Golden State retail rebates have ended. Check sdge.com.

What gets installed wrong?

  1. Heat pump commissioned as a furnace-plus-AC. Backup heat never shuts up.
  2. Nest without solid C, then phantom calls months later.
  3. No sensor plan, so bedrooms miss setpoint.

Those are configuration problems. A licensed pro can often correct them on a maintenance visit. Climate Pros SD does not perform that work.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Nest or Ecobee?

Heat pump, no C, HomeKit, or room sensors: Ecobee. Simple conventional plus Google learning: Nest.

Does Ecobee work with HomeKit?

Yes on current models, with Matter on many. Nest does not.

Do I need a C-wire for Nest?

Nest may run without one. Reliability is mixed. Ecobee PEK is the usual no-C path.

Can I install it myself?

Simple conventional with C, maybe. Heat pump, dual fuel, multi-stage, or no C: hire a licensed HVAC contractor. Miswiring damages equipment.

How long do they last?

Treat them as electronics with a multi-year life, not a 20-year furnace. Plan on replacing when the app or radio dies. No verified average in our claims file.

Are they “worth it” in San Diego?

They are worth it if you use schedules and 4 to 9 p.m. awareness. They are not worth a fabricated 10 to 15% bill cut.
