A spring tune-up exists to catch the single failure that accounts for most August breakdowns: the run capacitor. We measure microfarads, check refrigerant charge, wash the coil, replace your filter, and flush the condensate drain. 60 to 90 minutes, written report before we leave.

Why capacitors?

Run capacitors are the single most common AC failure in San Diego. They degrade slowly — a 45 microfarad capacitor might read 42, then 38, then 31, then dead. A multimeter reading catches it before it fails on the hottest day. Replacement is a $40 part; an August emergency call is not.

Do I need a tune-up if the system seems fine?

'Seems fine' misses degradation. A system short on refrigerant by 10% still cools but draws more amps, stresses the compressor, and runs up your bill. A dirty condenser coil can cut efficiency 15% with no audible symptom. Tune-ups find what you cannot hear.

When should I book one?

March through early May for cooling — after the rains, before the heat. Our calendar fills fast in early May, so late March or April is the sweet spot. Heating tune-ups are best in October and early November.
