Red flags

When should you stop and call a professional?

Six signs that the problem is past DIY. Turn the system off and pick up the phone — running a system with these issues turns cheap repairs into expensive replacements.

  • Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil

Usually low refrigerant or airflow restriction. Running like this burns out the compressor fast — shut it off.

  • Burning smell, sparks, or visible smoke

Electrical issue. Cut power at the breaker and call. Don't wait.

  • Water dripping from ceiling vents or light fixtures

Condensate overflow. If the drip is near electrical, shut off the AC and the affected circuit.

  • Hissing or bubbling near the indoor unit

Refrigerant leak. The gas is not toxic in small amounts but needs certified recovery.

  • Loud grinding, metallic screeching, or banging from the outdoor unit

Fan bearing, compressor, or loose part. Shut it off before it self-destructs.

  • AC runs continuously and never reaches the setpoint

In San Diego, non-stop running on a 90°F day means undersized, low refrigerant, or leaky ductwork. A proper diagnostic finds it.
