If you live with asthma or allergies in San Diego, the HVAC system can lower particle load or quietly recirculate it. This page is equipment and operations, not a diagnosis. Talk with your clinician about medications, triggers, and heat. Climate Pros SD matches you with licensed, independent HVAC professionals. They do not practice medicine.

CDC heat guidance for older adults: stay in air-conditioned space in very hot weather. Do not rely on a fan as the main cooling source when it is very hot. That is heat safety, not an allergy setpoint.

What does San Diego air actually carry?

The county is not one pollen calendar.

Winter oaks. Coast live oak and Engelmann oak shed in our mild winter. Inland and East County often feel it first.

Eucalyptus and grasses. Eucalyptus is common. Grass peaks in spring.

Agricultural dust. Ramona, Valley Center, Fallbrook, Bonsall, Jamul sit near working land.

Marine air. From Imperial Beach to Oceanside, salt and port-adjacent air can aggravate airways even when it is not “classic” pollen.

Wildfire smoke. PM2.5 events can last. Standard 1-inch filters load fast.

NWS: coast moderated, valleys warmer in summer, hot easterly winds possible at the beach. Smoke and heat can arrive together inland.

A setup that handles a smoke week usually handles February oak. Build for the hard week.

Why is MERV 13 a ceiling in many 1-inch slots?

Higher MERV catches smaller particles and adds resistance. Residential blowers have a static-pressure budget.

When you exceed it:

  • The motor runs hotter.
  • Coil airflow drops and ice can form.
  • Air sneaks around a warped filter.
  • Distant rooms lose supply.

The usual upgrade is not a thinner MERV 16. It is a 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet so MERV 13 has area. A licensed HVAC contractor confirms that with a gauge, then installs. Climate Pros SD does not.

SetupRole
MERV 8 to 11, 1-inchDust and basic pollen if the slot is honest
MERV 13, thick mediaFiner pollen and more smoke particles, after a static check
Media plus bedroom HEPASleep hours during smoke or severe symptoms
Whole-house HEPA bypassOwn fan, parallel to the main blower, for medical-grade particle goals
Coil UV-CBiofilm on the coil, not pollen

We do not publish hardware or labor prices, and we do not invent a “75 to 85% at 0.3 micron” capture claim for MERV 13.

When is a whole-house HEPA bypass worth discussing?

Severe asthma, immunocompromised household members, or a goal of filtering smoke at the air handler. The bypass has its own fan so the main blower does not see HEPA resistance. It does not heat, cool, or dry. It uses power whenever you run it. Ask the contractor about filter change intervals for that specific unit.

If a media cabinet already fits, many allergy households stop there. HEPA is a next step for a named reason.

What do UV-C lights actually do?

Coil-mounted UV can limit biofilm on the evaporator and pan (the “dirty sock” smell in damp coastal houses). UV does not replace a filter for pollen, dander, or smoke. Air moves too fast for miracle in-duct kill rates from a brochure. Buy UV for coil hygiene if the pro sees biological growth. Buy filtration for particles.

How should you run the system on a smoke day?

  1. Fan on, not auto, so air keeps hitting the filter.
  2. Shut ERV/HRV fresh air if you have it.
  3. Windows closed.
  4. Portable HEPA in the bedroom, sized to that room’s CADR.
  5. Inspect the HVAC filter when outdoor air recovers.

Smart thermostats can schedule fan-on. SDG&E TOU still peaks 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on listed residential plans. Fan-on uses energy. There is no verified daily cost in our ledger. Precool and 78F-or-higher during peak, health permitting, is SDG&E heat-wave guidance, separate from smoke mode.

What should you buy, in order?

Fix the filter slot first. Then media. Then portable HEPA where you sleep. Then bypass HEPA. UV last, and only for coil hygiene.

Renters: best 1-inch the system allows, plus portables. Do not cut ducts.

Ducts: ENERGY STAR typical leaky house loses about 20% to 30% of moving air through ducts. EPA: no routine cleaning calendar. Clean for contamination. Seal for leaks. Neither is an asthma cure.

Federal 25C does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025. TECH single-family heat pump HVAC reservations stopped November 14, 2025. HEEHRA single-family was fully reserved February 24, 2026. Those programs are not IAQ coupons.

FAQs

Is MERV 13 too tight?

In a 1-inch slot, often. In a deep cabinet, often fine after measurement.

Do I need HEPA if I have MERV 13?

Not automatically. HEPA is for a higher particle goal. Ask your clinician what environment they want. Ask the HVAC pro what the ducts can support.

How often should MERV 13 be changed?

Look at it. Thin filters: often monthly to every other month. Thick media: inspect each season and after smoke.

Will one room purifier clean the whole house?

No. CADR is per room. Whole-home needs the air handler path.

Humidifier or dehumidifier for asthma?

Measure first. Coastal summers can run damp. Inland winters can run dry. Equipment after a hygrometer, not before.

Does a smart thermostat help allergies?

It helps you run the blower through the filter on purpose. See thermostat installation.
