For the broader San Diego HVAC map, see the complete guide. This post is only the repair-versus-replace heuristic.
Climate Pros SD matches you with licensed HVAC companies. We do not diagnose from the driveway, set repair prices, or tell you the rule “requires” replacement.
The $5,000 rule: multiply the system’s age in years by the quoted repair in dollars. If the product is more than $5,000, many technicians lean toward replacement. If it is less, they lean repair. It is a trade shortcut, not a warranty and not a Climate Pros SD price.
How does the arithmetic work?
Formula: age (years) × quoted repair ($) = score
| Score | How people in the trade often read it |
|---|---|
| Well under $5,000 | Lean repair |
| Around $5,000 | Borderline. Look at refrigerant, repeat failures, and a replacement scope |
| Well over $5,000 | Lean replace |
That table is the heuristic’s own threshold. It is not a quote. Plug in the number on the invoice in front of you, not a blog “typical capacitor.”
A 50% rule is a different shortcut: if the repair is more than half of a written replacement quote for that house, replacement often wins. Use both only after you have both quotes. Climate Pros SD does not invent the replacement side of that fraction.
What the rule cannot see
R-22. Production and import of R-22 have been banned in the United States since January 1, 2020. Existing systems may still be serviced with recycled or previously produced refrigerant. A recharge-plus-leak job on an R-22 machine can still be the worse spend even when the $5,000 score looks small. See R-22 vs R-410A vs R-454B.
Repeat failures. Two major repairs in a short window is a pattern. The single-event multiplier misses that.
Rebates. Section 25C does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025. TECH single-family heat pump incentives were fully reserved on November 14, 2025. HEEHRA single-family was fully reserved as of February 24, 2026. Do not subtract a 2025 stack from a 2026 replacement quote. See federal 25C and rebate stack.
Coastal salt versus inland runtime. Same part, different root cause. See climate zones and how long an AC lasts.
Operating cost. SDG&E time-of-use plans currently list 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on-peak. That can change a bill. It does not let this brand invent a yearly savings figure.
A cleaner order of questions
- What refrigerant does this machine use?
- What is the quoted repair, itemized?
- Apply the $5,000 multiplier to that quote.
- Get a replacement quote with the same house assumptions (ducts, electrical, permit).
- If you are selling soon, repair-and-disclose is a different goal than staying ten years. See pre-purchase inspection.

FAQs
What is the $5,000 rule for HVAC?
Age in years times the quoted repair. Over $5,000, many techs lean replace. Under, repair. First filter only.
Does the $5,000 rule still apply in 2026?
The arithmetic still exists. Replacement quotes, refrigerant rules, and rebate status are not frozen at 2018. Use current written numbers.
When should I replace instead of repairing?
R-22 supply risk, repeat major failures, or a replacement quote that the $5,000 or 50% heuristic cannot defend against. The assigned company still has to see the machine.
What is the 50% rule for HVAC?
Repair versus half of a quoted new system for that house. Not half of a blog “average.”
Is repairing an old AC worth it?
A small wear-item on a tight system can be. A major heat exchanger, coil, or compressor on an old R-22 cabinet often is not. Get both quotes.
What’s the average cost of HVAC repair in San Diego?
Climate Pros SD does not publish one. Ask what the diagnostic fee is and whether it applies toward the work.
How long should an AC last in San Diego?
See how long an AC lasts. We do not invent a year count here.
Should I get a second opinion on a major repair?
You can. Climate Pros SD can match another licensed company. We do not promise a cheap second diagnostic or same-day arrival.
