If the condenser is old enough, it may still run on R-22 (often sold as Freon). That matters because U.S. production and import of R-22 (HCFC-22) have been banned since January 1, 2020. Existing systems may still be serviced with recycled or previously produced refrigerant. Newer plants use R-410A. Equipment manufactured or imported after January 1, 2025 must meet EPA’s GWP limit of 700, so new residential air conditioners and heat pumps use low-GWP refrigerants. R-454B is one common choice. R-410A is not legal in that new-equipment category.

Climate Pros SD matches you with licensed, independent HVAC professionals. They read the nameplate and recover refrigerant legally. We do not sell pounds of gas or set prices.

Technician checking the nameplate on a San Diego AC condenser to identify the refrigerant type.

How do you identify the refrigerant in a minute?

On the outdoor unit, find the data plate. Look for “Refrigerant” or “Factory Charge.”

  • R-22 / HCFC-22 / Freon. Common on systems from 2009 and earlier. Some 2010 builder jobs still used it.
  • R-410A / Puron and other trade names. Typical for many 2010 through 2024 San Diego installs.
  • A 2025-and-later low-GWP refrigerant such as R-454B on new equipment. Confirm the exact name on that plate. Do not assume every new unit is the same blend.

If the plate is bleached (west-facing coastal condensers in places like Imperial Beach), use the install year as a hint, then have a tech confirm. Call (442) 777-6440 and we will match you with a licensed pro. There is no “free confirmation” from Climate Pros SD. Ask the contractor how they charge for a look.

What is true about R-22 in 2026?

EPA Class II ODS phaseout: production and import banned January 1, 2020. Use in existing equipment remains legal. Venting is not. Stock for service is whatever was already produced or recycled. We will not quote a per-pound street price. Those numbers move and are not in our verified table.

A sealed system does not “use up” refrigerant. If you are low, you have a leak. Top-off without a leak search is a warning sign. See refrigerant leak signs.

Coastal salt shortens coil life. That is a corrosion pattern, not a verified “3 to 5 years faster” statistic.

The trade’s 5,000 rule (age times repair cost) is a heuristic. If the product is huge on an R-22 plant, replacement often wins. It is not a Climate Pros SD guarantee. Compare a written repair to a written replace. 5000 rule.

Manufacturers stopped treating R-22 as a current product line. Replacement parts can be awkward. That is a reason to get both numbers, not a reason to invent a compressor invoice.

What is true about R-410A in 2026?

R-410A remains legal to produce, sell, and use for servicing existing equipment. EPA has not set an end date for that service use in the AIM Act summary we rely on. Do not say R-410A is “banned for service.”

New residential and light-commercial AC and heat pump systems manufactured or imported after January 1, 2025 must use refrigerants with GWP at or below 700. R-410A does not meet that new-equipment limit. Equipment built before that date can still be installed under EPA’s “no installation compliance date” exception when all specified components were manufactured or imported prior to January 1, 2025. Inventory sell-through is a real category. Ask the contractor what is actually on the truck.

You cannot pour R-454B into an R-410A circuit as a drop-in. Oils, pressures, and leak-detection rules differ. A “conversion” that replaces the outdoor unit, coil, and often the line set is a replacement, not a magic canister.

Do not forecast R-410A price climbs. We have no verified percent.

What should you know about R-454B and other low-GWP blends?

From a homeowner’s chair, capacity and SEER2 still live on the AHRI sticker, not the refrigerant nickname. Differences that matter in the field:

  • Many low-GWP residential blends are A2L (mildly flammable). Follow the manufacturer’s sensors and charge limits. The installing C-20 contractor owns that compliance.
  • Line-set reuse is a warranty and code question, not a blog default. Ask before anyone keeps old copper.
  • New equipment in 2026 is supposed to be this generation, not a new R-410A factory unit.

Low-GWP equipment does not automatically unlock a 2026 federal credit. Section 25C: qualifying 2025 installations may still sit in the credit period; property placed in service after December 31, 2025 does not. For 2025 property, report QMID. The IRS annual limit for qualified heat pumps and heat pump water heaters was $2,000. The credit is nonrefundable. Talk to a tax professional.

TECH Clean California single-family heat pump HVAC incentives stopped new reservations November 14, 2025. HEEHRA single-family rebates were fully reserved February 24, 2026. Do not stack those names onto an R-454B bid as if they were open cash. A project cannot take both TECH and HEEHRA (TECH rules as of July 15, 2025). SDG&E Golden State retail rebates have ended.

How should you choose top-off, repair, or replace?

  1. R-22: default to a replacement conversation plus Manual J. Sizing. Mild San Diego winters make heat pumps a frequent replace path. Heat pump vs furnace.
  2. R-410A, relatively young plant, known leak: find, fix, recharge.
  3. R-410A, old plant, large repair: run the 5,000 heuristic on real quotes.
  4. Top-off only, no leak work: get another licensed opinion. Scams.

City of San Diego requires a mechanical permit to install, alter, replace, or repair HVAC or refrigeration in that city. Other jurisdictions differ. The contractor pulls the permit. Title 24 field verification applies when systems are altered or replaced. A CEC-certified rater handles current ECC rules. We do not publish a leakage percentage.

NWS: coast is moderated, valleys run hotter in summer. Coastal coated coils are a spec conversation when you replace, not a promise of doubled life.

FAQ

Is R-22 illegal in 2026?

Using it in existing equipment is legal. Producing or importing new R-22 has been banned since January 1, 2020. Venting refrigerant is illegal.

Can I convert R-22 to R-410A or R-454B?

Not as a cheap canister swap. The circuit is built for one refrigerant family. A real change is essentially a new system.

Why is “Freon” expensive?

Supply is leftover and recycled after the production ban. We will not publish a 2026 per-pound figure.

What is the difference between Freon and Puron?

Freon is a trade name tied to R-22. Puron is a Carrier trade name for R-410A. Different pressures and oils. Not interchangeable.

Does R-454B always need new copper?

Ask the manufacturer instructions and the installing contractor. Warranties often want new or properly processed line sets.

A tech wants several pounds of R-22 with no leak repair. Fair?

The red flag is recharge without finding the leak, not a number we will invent. Get a second licensed quote.
