HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. It is the equipment that heats, cools, moves, and sometimes filters air. In this county that is often a gas furnace plus AC sharing ducts, or one heat pump doing both.

Outdoor condenser and indoor furnace at a San Diego home

The three letters

H. Heating. Gas furnace, electric resistance, or a heat pump in heating mode.

V. Ventilation. The blower, ducts, returns, supplies, and any outdoor-air exchange. Many San Diego houses rely on leaks and open windows more than a dedicated ERV.

AC. Air conditioning. Central AC or a heat pump in cooling mode, using the same air paths.

When people say “the HVAC,” they usually mean that whole package.

What you can actually see

Post-1980 tract homes typically have an outdoor condenser (AC-only or heat pump), an indoor furnace or air handler, a copper line set, ducts, supplies, returns, and a thermostat. Pre-1970 houses often started with a wall or floor furnace and no central cold air. Adding comfort then is often a mini-split or a ducted retrofit, quoted after someone sees the attic and the electric panel.

Common layouts: AC plus gas furnace; one ducted heat pump; ductless mini-split heads; dual-fuel (heat pump plus gas backup); wall or floor furnace only.

Indoor air handler and ducts

NWS describes cooler marine influence near the coast and hotter inland afternoons. That changes how hard cooling runs. It does not give this site a days-per-year AC table or a salt-air year penalty.
