Thermostat installation is a small job until the wall has no C-wire, the system is a heat pump, or the old wiring is cloth-insulated. Device retail prices are public. Labor is not a network-wide table. The matched HVAC company quotes after it sees the existing thermostat and the air handler terminals.
Climate Pros SD matches homeowners with licensed independent HVAC companies. We do not install thermostats, set labor rates, or warrant Nest, Ecobee, or Honeywell hardware.
What should a thermostat install quote include?
| Line to insist on | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Device, if they supply it | Retail box versus installer-supplied markup |
| Labor scope | Swap only, versus PEK, power connector, or a new C-wire pull |
| System type in the menu | Heat pump vs conventional AC plus furnace is a common mis-set |
| Staging and zones | Two-stage and multi-zone are extra terminals and extra setup |
| Testing | Heat, cool, and fan, plus reversing valve if you have a heat pump |
| What is excluded | Drywall repair beyond a smaller new base, new cat-5, or panel work |
A 90-second faceplate swap is not a complete install. The configuration step is what keeps a heat pump from running strip heat all winter.
What is a C-wire, and why does it change the job?
Smart thermostats need constant 24-volt power. The C-wire (common) is that return from the air handler or furnace control board. Many San Diego houses built before 1990 never had one. You cannot always see it without pulling the old thermostat.
If a C-wire is already landed, a Nest or Ecobee swap is mostly identification, mounting, Wi-Fi, and menu setup.
If there is no C-wire, typical options:
- Run a new C-wire when attic or crawl access to the equipment is honest. Cleanest long-term answer.
- Power Extender Kit (PEK). Ecobee Enhanced and Premium include a kit that creates a C signal at the equipment. Install time shifts to the air handler, not just the hallway.
- Nest Power Connector (sold separately). Similar idea. Ask the tech to install it rather than leaving the Nest in power-stealing mode.
Power-stealing without a real C-wire or connector works on some systems and drops others offline. That is a repeat-visit problem, not a DIY badge.
Which thermostat jobs are easy DIY, and which are not?
A simple single-stage AC plus furnace with a labeled C-wire is a fair homeowner project if you are comfortable with low-voltage wiring. Nest and Ecobee publish those cases.
Bring a licensed HVAC company (or an electrician, if that is who owns the wiring in your house) for:
- Heat pump configuration (auxiliary heat lockout, reversing valve O/B)
- PEK or new C-wire at the equipment
- Multi-stage compressors
- Dual-fuel (heat pump plus gas furnace)
Mis-set heat pumps are a San Diego pattern: the owner installs a Nest as “conventional,” backup strips run, and the SDG&E bill spikes. The menu fix is short. Finding it is the hard part.
Coastal homes sometimes have corroded screw terminals from salt air in the wall cavity. Pre-1980 houses in Coronado, La Jolla, North Park, Hillcrest, and older Escondido often have no C-wire and no easy attic path. That is a fishing job, not a 20-minute swap.

Do rebates still pay for a standalone thermostat?
Confirm current SDG&E offers on sdge.com/rebates and the SDG&E marketplace before you buy. Golden State retail offerings ended. An old dollar figure on a leftover table is not a live coupon.
TECH Clean California stopped new single-family HVAC reservations on November 14, 2025. A thermostat alone is not a TECH measure you can count on in 2026. Bundling a thermostat into a heat-pump project does not reopen a closed reservation pool.
Federal 25C does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025. See the IRS 25C page.
A smart thermostat can hold a schedule that backs off during SDG&E time-of-use on-peak, currently listed as 4-9 p.m. on common residential TOU plans. Confirm your plan at SDG&E pricing plans. This page does not publish cents per kWh or a payback year.
FAQs
How much does it cost to install a thermostat in San Diego?
Device cost is whatever you pay retail. Labor depends on C-wire, heat-pump menus, zones, and old wiring. Climate Pros SD does not publish installed bands.
How long does thermostat installation take?
A same-wiring swap is often under an hour. No C-wire plus a PEK or a new pull can take much of a visit. Heat-pump setup adds menu time. Ask the company for a time window, not a same-day promise from this brand.
Can I install a thermostat myself?
For a simple single-stage system with a C-wire, often yes. For heat pumps, dual-fuel, or no C-wire, professional setup is the cheaper mistake to avoid.
Is there a labor charge if I provide my own thermostat?
Usually yes. You are paying for removal, landing wires, configuration, and a test cycle. Ask if they will install a sealed retail box you supply.
Why is a smart thermostat more involved than a basic one?
It needs constant power (C-wire or kit), more menu fields, and Wi-Fi. Heat-pump fields are easy to get wrong.
Does SDG&E offer rebates for smart thermostats?
Sometimes, through demand-response or marketplace programs. Check the live SDG&E pages the week you buy. Do not use this article as the amount.
What if my home does not have a C-wire?
Run a wire, use an Ecobee PEK, or use a Nest Power Connector. Avoid leaving a Nest in power-stealing mode if you can.

When to call
If you are not sure whether you have a C-wire or a heat pump, call (442) 777-6440. Climate Pros SD matches you with a licensed independent HVAC company. Ask them to say, in writing, how they will power the thermostat and how they will set the system type.
