When the furnace fails on a cool San Diego night, the questions are what failed, whether it is safe to keep running, and what the written repair includes. A blog cannot answer with a county parts menu. Access, model, and whether the heat exchanger is intact all move the quote.
Climate Pros SD matches homeowners with licensed independent HVAC companies. We do not repair furnaces, set diagnostic fees, or warrant parts.
What furnace problems show up in this climate?
San Diego furnaces run fewer hours than Midwest units. Failures often come from sitting idle: dusty burners, a dirty flame sensor, an ignitor that opens on the first cold night, or a blower that seized after months off. Clogged filters overheat the exchanger and trip limit switches. Thermostats and loose low-voltage connections cause “no heat” that is not the gas valve.
A cracked heat exchanger is a carbon monoxide risk. That is a replace-or-red-tag conversation, not a “clean and hope” visit. Annual combustion and exchanger inspection is how that gets caught early. See furnace repair service.
How do coastal and inland houses differ?
Coastal Point Loma, La Jolla, and Encinitas heat less. Parts sit longer. Salt air can still corrode electricals on equipment in garages that breathe ocean air.
Inland Scripps Ranch, Tierrasanta, Escondido, and El Cajon see colder nights and larger swings. Blowers and exchangers cycle more. Filters load faster. AC in those same houses takes a harder summer; neighborhood AC notes are in AC repair by area.
Those are patterns. They are not prices.
What should a furnace repair quote include?
| Line | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic or trip fee | Ask if it applies to the repair if you approve |
| Failed part, with rating or OEM number | Ignitor, flame sensor, gas valve, board, motor are not interchangeable |
| Tests already run | Flame sense microamps, ignitor ohms, amp draw, gas pressure |
| Safety items | Heat exchanger condition, CO, and whether they will leave the unit tagged |
| Permit | Some replacements and some gas-line work need one; the contractor pulls it |
| Warranty in writing | Part vs labor, and who comes back |
Ignitor. Lights the burner on hot-surface systems. No glow, no heat. Age and heat cycles crack them.
Flame sensor. If it cannot prove flame, the control shuts the gas. Soot can be cleaned; sometimes the rod is spent.
Blower motor. Heat at the burners but no air, or grinding at the cabinet. PSC vs ECM is a different part and a different labor hour.
Climate Pros SD does not publish typical dollars for those three. The matched company quotes after diagnosis.
After-hours arrival is that company’s policy, stated before they roll. This brand does not promise same-day or 24/7 heat.
When does replacement beat another repair?
Age around 15-20 years is the usual planning window. A major repair on an old cabinet, especially a cracked exchanger, usually ends in replacement. Stacked service calls on a 16-year-old unit are a signal even when each visit “worked.”
Efficiency and comfort can improve with a new furnace or a heat pump, but 2026 incentive math is tight: 25C is not for property placed in service after December 31, 2025 (IRS 25C; $2,000 was the IRS design cap for qualifying 2025 heat pumps). TECH single-family reservations stopped November 14, 2025. HEEHRA single-family was fully reserved February 24, 2026. Do not stack TECH and HEEHRA as of July 15, 2025. Replacement scope: furnace replacement cost.
How do you get a fair repair quote?
Work with a C-20 you can look up on cslb.ca.gov. For a blower or a board, a second opinion is reasonable. Ask for parts, labor, and diagnostic on one page. A trustworthy tech explains the failure with a reading, not only a story.
Climate Pros SD does not collect or display testimonials. Check licenses and the written scope.
