Two types of blower motors, two different failure patterns

Older and budget furnaces generally use a PSC motor, a simpler single-speed design that runs at one fixed speed whenever it’s called on. Higher-efficiency furnaces installed over roughly the last 15 years increasingly use an ECM, a variable-speed motor that ramps up and down gradually and can run at multiple speeds for different stages of heating or continuous low-speed circulation. Both types eventually wear out, but they show different warning signs before they go.

A PSC motor’s most common warning is a failing run capacitor, the same small cylindrical part that fails on air conditioner compressors and outdoor fan motors. When the capacitor weakens, the motor struggles to start, may hum without spinning, or spins slowly and pulls more current than it should. An ECM motor’s electronics module can develop its own faults independent of the motor windings themselves, and ECM failures are more often diagnosed through error codes on newer control boards rather than a simple capacitor test.

Signs your blower motor is failing

Weak or no airflow at all registers, even though you can hear or feel the furnace running. If the burners are firing but nothing’s coming out of the vents, the blower wheel isn’t moving air, which points to the motor, a failed capacitor, or in rarer cases, a blower wheel that’s come loose from its motor shaft.

Grinding, screeching, or rattling noise from the furnace cabinet. This usually means the motor bearings are wearing out. A motor that’s been running with worn bearings for a while will get louder gradually before it eventually seizes completely.

Blower runs constantly and won’t shut off. This is more likely a control board or limit switch issue than the motor itself, but it’s worth ruling out a stuck relay before assuming a bigger problem.
