Your SDG&E bill is the sum of everything on that statement: energy, plan periods, fixed charges, and any Community Choice Aggregator generation. Cooling is often the load that changes most from a mild month to a hot one. This page does not publish a cents-per-kWh table, a ranking of SDG&E against other utilities, or a guaranteed bill cut.
What actually prints on the bill?
Start with the bill itself, not a blog average.
- Note the billing dates, plan name, and whether you are a CCA customer.
- Separate fixed charges from energy charges. On the captured SDG&E residential pricing page, displayed energy prices exclude the monthly residential Base Services Charge.
- If a CCA supplies generation, SDG&E figures on that page are delivery-only. Add the CCA generation price once. Do not add a bundled generation-and-delivery price on top of a separate generation charge.
- Listed residential time-of-use plans have a 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on-peak period. Confirm the periods that apply to your plan. Rates change.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration defines one kilowatt as 1,000 watts and one kWh as one kilowatt used for one hour. Use that definition with your own kWh and your own prices. See how to calculate AC running cost.
Why can cooling dominate a summer spike?
When the outdoor load rises, the compressor runs more hours. Inland valleys often need more cooling than the immediate coast. The National Weather Service describes that ocean-versus-valley pattern qualitatively. It does not assign your bill a ZIP code total.
Four HVAC conditions commonly raise those hours or the power during those hours. None of them comes with a published percent savings from this brand.
1. Equipment that uses more electricity for the same cooling
SEER2 is a seasonal rating in Btu per watt-hour. DOE notes that example energy use depends on a test method and assumed hours, and that savings vary with actual use. DOE central AC guidance. A replacement may use less energy under comparable conditions. It does not promise a 40 percent bill cut.
2. Filters, coils, and ducts that make the system work harder
A clogged filter or dirty outdoor coil can extend runtime. ENERGY STAR says typical forced-air ducts can lose about 20 to 30 percent of moving air to leaks. That is national typical-house language, not your leakage test. ENERGY STAR. EPA does not treat duct cleaning as a scheduled efficiency upgrade. EPA.
3. A schedule that ignores when people are home
Holding a colder setpoint all day, including empty hours, can add compressor time. Compare similar-weather days on your own interval data before claiming a cause.
4. Cooling during the on-peak window
If you are on a time-of-use plan, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. is the listed on-peak period. SDG&E heat-wave guidance suggests precooling earlier, then 78°F or higher from 4 to 9 p.m., health permitting. That is utility conservation guidance, not a mandated 70°F precool, and not a guaranteed savings percent.
The CDC advises older adults to stay in air-conditioned buildings when it is hot and not to rely on a fan as the main cooling source when it is very hot. Comfort and health come before a peak-hour experiment.
Coastal vs inland: what changes?
A marine-layer afternoon and a hot inland afternoon are not the same cooling job. Use NWS regional language, then measure runtime in your house. City pages such as Chula Vista and El Cajon describe local service context. They do not assign a summer bill.
What can you do without a fake savings table?
- Confirm plan, CCA status, and peak hours on the current SDG&E materials.
- Compare kWh and cooling-runtime reports across similar days.
- Change filters per the equipment instructions.
- Try SDG&E’s health-permitting 4 to 9 p.m. guidance only if the household can tolerate it.
- If the system cannot hold a safe, comfortable temperature, call for a licensed check.

FAQs
Is my AC making my SDG&E bill high?
It can, if cooling hours rose. Check runtime and whole-home kWh together. Other loads and fixed charges still sit on the same bill.
Why does San Diego electricity pricing feel high?
Your plan, tier, period, CCA status, and usage all matter. This page does not invent an average cents-per-kWh figure. Read the current SDG&E pricing plans.
Does a smart thermostat lower my SDG&E bill?
Only if the schedule changes when and how long the compressor runs, in ways your plan prices. There is no universal payback.
Is it cheaper to run AC at night in San Diego?
On a time-of-use plan, periods have different prices. Confirm yours. Overnight comfort still has to work for the people in the home.
How much can a new high-efficiency AC save?
No fixed monthly or percentage saving applies to every replacement. Compare a contractor’s model with measured use from the current system.
