For the broader San Diego HVAC picture (system types, when to replace, contractor vetting), see the complete guide to San Diego HVAC in 2026. This post is the replacement-quote checklist.

Climate Pros SD is a referral service. We match you with licensed independent HVAC companies. We do not replace systems, set prices, or promise a net after rebates. When the old condenser dies, you need a written scope, not a blog price band.

What a fair 2026 HVAC replacement quote includes line-by-line

A trustworthy quote is never one number on a card. When you need a full replacement, look for these lines. Anything less is a reason to ask again or call another company.

  • Equipment: Brand, model numbers, and ratings (SEER2, HSPF2, AFUE as applicable) for indoor and outdoor equipment.
  • Labor: Recovery and disposal of the old refrigerant and equipment, setting new equipment, electrical and refrigerant connections, and startup. A standard changeout is often a full day for two technicians. The company confirms duration.
  • Materials: Pad, disconnect and whip, line set, condensate drain, thermostat, flue work if gas remains. Vague “shop fees” hide markup.
  • Ductwork: Transitions, sealing, or replacement if the new cabinet does not match the old plenums. Ask for test results, not a guess from the attic hatch.
  • Permit and inspection: The matched contractor pulls the city or county permit.
  • Title 24 field verification: Independent testing when a system is altered or replaced. As of January 1, 2026, CEC relocated HERS field-verification scope into the Energy Code Compliance program. Ask which tests apply. See the CEC HERS program page.

What changes the bid besides square footage

Climate Pros SD does not publish installed price bands by home size. Two houses with the same floor area can bid far apart because of:

  • Heat pump versus AC plus gas furnace
  • Single-stage versus two-stage or variable-speed
  • Attic versus garage or closet access
  • Line-set length and whether the set is replaced
  • Duct leakage and whether runs get replaced
  • Electrical service and 240-volt circuit work
  • Coastal hardware versus inland
  • Permit and third-party testing for that jurisdiction

If you are still choosing repair versus replace, see AC replacement vs repair.

Why two quotes for the “same” job can be thousands apart

Itemized HVAC replacement estimate on a clipboard

Legitimate reasons:

  • Equipment quality and efficiency. Builder-grade single-stage is not a premium variable-speed package.
  • Scope. One company reuses the line set; another replaces it for warranty. One includes a new thermostat; another reuses yours.
  • Company overhead. Licensed, insured companies carry real costs. Verify the C-20 on the CSLB license check.
  • Warranties. Manufacturer parts terms and installer labor terms are different contracts. Read both. See the FTC on warranties and service contracts.

Red flags:

  • No itemization
  • Suggesting you skip permits
  • “Sign today or the price changes”

Permit, Title 24, and field verification you cannot skip

In the City of San Diego, HVAC work of this kind needs a mechanical permit. Do not assume every county city uses the same fee schedule. Ask the matched company which counter they will use.

Title 24, Part 6, requires field verification when HVAC is altered or replaced, by a CEC-certified rater independent of the installer. Do not accept a leakage percentage quoted from memory. Confirm current tests with the rater and the California Energy Commission.

A quote that omits permit and testing is not an all-in price.

Financing and rebates: do not invent a 2026 net

Some HVAC companies offer their own financing. Terms belong on that company’s paperwork, not on this site.

Do not subtract closed programs from a 2026 bid:

  • Section 25C: Not for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. IRS 25C.
  • TECH single-family HVAC: Reservations stopped November 14, 2025. TECH incentives.
  • HEEHRA single-family: Fully reserved as of February 24, 2026. CEC IRA rebates and HEEHRA rules.
  • SDG&E: Recheck sdge.com/rebates. Golden State Rebates retail offerings have ended.

Existing approved reservations may continue. A waitlist is not funding. As of July 15, 2025, a project cannot receive both TECH and HEEHRA.
